| As we enter our fourth plus month of traveling the photo memory cards are filling up and the budget running down (especially since Europe.) If all else fails on the career front upon our return...we will have some cool pictures! With 'thrift' of the essence, we left Croatia to Slovenia to get a reasonable flight to London to get a cheap flight to India. (Did you get that?)
Slovenia is a neat little country with a swissaustri feel (that's Swiss and Austrian.) We first went to the capital city of Ljubljana (sounds like Loooobeeeeeyanna.) Since it was dumping BUCKETS of rain, the only views that I can share are of cobblestoned streets flashing by which were streaming with water as we dashed from hostel to hostel and finally hostel, but not before getting SOAKED. After drying off and strewing our moist possessions all over our double room, we headed out to meet Dachauer for some Slovenian grub. We found just the place you would expect: a warm and publike atmosphere with heavy wooden tables and a group of rotund locals in rugby gear sitting next to us. This was just the place to be with Dachauer who was in fifth gear and ready to party. We ate meaty, stewy things with bread pudding and beers. (I justified this since we are heading to India and Nepal and I am losing weight just thinking about it.)
The following day it was sunny and clear so we took a bus to Lake Bled. The ride was picturesque through green foothills showing signs of fall, little Swiss-type wooden houses with perfect flowerboxes on every windowsill and church steeples rising at least every quarter mile along the way. (I joked if Dachauer were still with us we could make a drinking game for him for every time he sees a steeple.) The foothills were backed by the dramatic snowcapped Julian Alps. Surrounded by mountains, Lake Bled is like glass with a few skullers cutting across in Olympic form. In the center of the lake is a tiny little island with a historic church (the island is roughly a couple of miles around the perimeter.) We stayed in a cute villa just off the lake and took a hike around it and up to a castle hanging over one of the lakeside cliffs. We had a late afternoon lunch at the castle of cold vinegary lentils and sausage (not a favorite) but the atmosphere was worth it. This place reminds of a small Lake Tahoe and it was a nice place to detox from Dachauer. ;) |
