| May 28, 2005 - One Night in Bangkok.
| | We made it to Bangkok! Thailand is one of my favorite places. When I was here for a month in 1999 (doing medical volunteer work) I remember my hosts saying "In Thailand there are two seasons, hot and very hot." Looks like Paul and I managed to visit this time during "very hot." Paul found a great guesthouse near the Chao Phraya river complete with a local outdoor market across the street. The guesthouse has great character with a jungle of plants in the open bar/restaurant as you enter. You have to walk around barefoot to protect the smooth teak floors. Our room on the second floor was colorfully painted, private bathroom, local artwork and the occasional live gecko on the ceiling. We gorged on amazing Thai food. Feeling on top of the world, we decided to take a stroll to a neighboring Buddhist temple. Paul first ran over to the market to grab some bottled water. He came back with the saddest face. His image of paradise had been shaken. He saw 9 or 10 rats running around the market. The reason this was concerning was because our ground floor OPEN bar and restaurant is just about 20 feet from this market and our room just two short flights above! As Paul told me about this discovery we noticed a fresh roadkill just steps away and also saw a roach scoot right by our feet. Luckily we survived our one night in Bangkok and are looking forward to some beach time in Ko Samui. We catch the train later tonight... |
